Diffusion weighted image (DWI) sequence was established by Denis LeBihan based on
Brownian motion of water molecule, which was found by Einstein. Conventional MRI visualized
the fixed proton atom, instead DWI visualized fixed proton sometime after Brownian
motion occurred in unfixed proton. Then we can visualize water-rich area, particularly,
early phase of mild ischemia, inflammation (CJD etc) and tumor. We also found neural
activities induce water accumulation and found accurate activated area of the neural
substrate responsible for the paradigms. We called it Diffusion fMRI (DfMRI) to visualize
the accurate neuronal activities compared to Blood Oxygen Level Dependency (by S.
Ogawa), that is the basis of functional MRI.
