Introduction to the special section on Robert Lisak's contributions to neuroimmunology

This special section honors the work of Robert P. Lisak MD. It commemorates two distinct achievements. In February 2012, Dr. Lisak completed a 25 year tenure as Chairman of Neurology at Wayne State University School of Medicine in Detroit, Michigan. During that time, he developed a department of remarkable stature, creating an atmosphere that fostered creative approaches to research, education and clinical care. The faculty grew from the initial group of 5 members to a department of over 35 clinicians and researchers. The residency increased from a total of 9 residents to over 21 and fellowships were created and developed in over 7 subspecialty areas. His careful and thoughtful approach to the care of patients with neurologic diseases is now being disseminated by hundreds of his former trainees. His tenure as chair will be remembered for his unlimited support for his faculty and residents and for his commitment to excellence in all aspects of academic neurologic activities. He was a chair who only accepted the best from himself and encouraged the best from those around him.
